Tooth wear

No matter how carefully teeth are looked after, teeth can get worn down with age which negatively impacts their appearance and can dramatically increase dental problems, increase sensitivity to hot and cold and even make eating more difficult.

At the Oatlands Referral Centre we treat various signs of dental wear and tear whilst avoiding invasive treatments as much as possible.

What causes wear to the teeth?

The teeth can become worn and damaged from several different factors such as tooth grinding, acidic food and drink and over-aggressive brushing. We assess the condition of the teeth and decide on the best way of managing and repairing them.

The main types of wear and tear that we treat include-

Abrasion– grooves, cracks or teeth in the teeth that may or may not be accompanied by gum recession and extra sensitivity. It is often caused by abrasive toothpastes and overly harsh brushing and can result in loss of structure.

Attrition-Flattening of the back teeth, the teeth can also be shortened, more faceted, yellowing, chipped and cracked and accompanied by pain and sensitivity. This type of wear is caused by contact with other teeth, for example grinding, so we need to address this habit as well as repairing the damage.

Erosion-Teeth appear yellow, chipped or cracked, glazed or transparent. This is caused by acidic food and drink and can affect all ages.

How do we treat this wear and tear?

At the Oatlands Referral Centre we offer a range of treatments so we can prescribe treatments based on scientific evidence, with modern approaches for conservative techniques. We are supported by excellent laboratory technicians and can make use of excellent facilities and equipment at the Oatlands Dental Lounge.

The overall aim is to restore the aesthetic appearance of the teeth, reduce sensitivity caused by wear and tear and prevent future damage to the teeth. We can bond composite resin to the teeth to cover worn, chipped and discoloured areas. Our restorative dentistry delivers fantastic results and helps patients to eat, drink and chew as normal to maintain their dentition into their later years.

If one of your patients is suffering from pain or discomfort caused by damage to their teeth, contact us today to arrange a consultation and we can give advice on managing and treating tooth wear and tear.
