General Overview of Treatments and Procedures

Periodontal disease is related to infections affecting the surrounding area of the teeth including the periodontal ligament and bone as well as the gums.

One of the earliest warning signs of gum disease is gingivitis and, if left untreated, gum disease can cause irreversible damage. Medical research has even found links between gum disease and other health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, respiratory disease and even strokes.

Periodontal disease is caused by bacteria in dental plaque. As the body’s natural reaction to bacterial infection is to fight it, this causes the immune system to release substances that result in inflammation and destruction of the gums, periodontal ligament and bone. The following symptoms are signs of gum disease that should wave the red flag for you and your patient:

●Swollen or shrinking gums
●Persistent bad breath
●Bleeding gums sometimes associated with pain

Even when teeth are well cared for there are lots of factors that can cause gum disease such as stress, smoking, previous faulty dental work, diseases and medication, and poor nutrition. We encourage patients to have regular dental checkups and intensive cleaning so that the teeth are cleaned of any tartar and plaque and any issues are detected and treated before they cause too much damage.

We deal with many referred patients who are suffering from gum disease as we are able to deal with the more complex and advanced stages of gum disease. Our resident periodontic expert is Dr Bhavin Pitamber who has worked within this field for many years. Bhavin carries out a thorough assessment of the periodontal tissues supplemented with photographs and x-rays. He carefully measures the depth of a number of crevices around the gums on each individual tooth and is passionate about achieving a quantitative improvement in the periodontal condition. He also trains patients to implement an excellent oral hygiene regimen to maintain results and increase the longevity of the dentition. Bhavin is a skilled clinician providing both complex surgical and non-surgical periodontal treatment and has excellent success rates.

As well as assessing the condition of patient’s teeth and gums, Dr Pitamber takes into account any medical history or lifestyle-related habits that affect their dental health. Patients are welcome to ask as many questions as they wish and discuss any queries or concerns. It is our goal to ensure that patients feel happy and comfortable with any treatments that they have with us and try to make nervous patients feel as at ease as possible. Before the treatment takes place we provide a written treatment plan and outline all costs so there are no nasty surprises and the patient can give their full consent.

We deal with many referrals for periodontal treatments as we specialise in calming nervous patients, our practitioners are highly trained in their chosen field and we maintain regular liaison with the patient’s regular practitioner so you are kept in the loop and are fully aware of what treatments we are carrying out whilst your patient is in our temporary care.
