At Oatlands Referral Centre we make use of highly advanced microscopes that allow our dentists to clearly see minute details. Our practice is one of the 1% of those that actually use microscopes.

How does a microscope aid dentistry?

As microscopes provide clear, enlarged and illuminated views of the mouth and teeth, they enable us to make a much more accurate diagnosis and provide patients with a suitable and effective treatment plan. We can use these findings to educate the patients and help them to gain an understanding of their dental issues and plan of treatment.

Are dental microscopes a new invention?

These types of microscopes have been around since the 1950s and have been used across many medical fields. They have proved invaluable for providing accurate diagnosis and for use in complex procedures. We have found that they are particularly useful for endodontics as well as helping with aesthetic dentistry and helping to improve the dental health of patients. If the microscope has a camera and video option then the dentist can even create films to illustrate problems and treatment plans to the patient in great detail.

At Oatlands Referral Centre we use the OPMI Pico dental microscope from Carl Zeiss which makes even the most intricate, detailed findings clearly visible. It allows us to get close up, focused views of all the regions of the mouth and vastly enhances the quality of all examinations. We use this microscope across many fields of dentistry including endodontics, restorative dentistry, periodontics and implantology.
