- CBCT/DPT
At Oatlands Referral Centre we use state of the art equipment to produce 3D (CBCT) and 2D (DPT) images of patients’ face, teeth and jaws. One of our favourite machines to use is the Sirona XG3D Scanner which moves around the face and jaws to give a fast and accurate two and three-dimensional views. This helps us to make a thorough diagnosis and plan treatment.

What exactly is a CBCT scanner?
CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) and DPT (Dental Panoramic Tomography) allow us to produce amazingly clear scans and images. As it uses a very low dose of radiation and provides results within a fast processing time so is often preferred to the standard X-ray machine. The Sirona machine allows us to produce high-resolution images of the jaws or just a single tooth.
Despite using an extremely low dose of radiation, it produces very accurate images from various angles. Unlike an X-ray machine is can show the difference between the different types of tissue.
Why do we use a CBCT scanner?
As well as helping us make a fast and accurate diagnosis, the CBCT scanner can be used to plan treatment and monitor progress. Thanks to its accuracy errors can be minimised and we can use the images to explain any problems to the patient and demonstrate how their treatment will work. We have found that using these images helps to put patients’ minds at ease and makes them feel more in control. This is particularly helpful for nervous patients as they can see how the procedure will work.
What treatments involve the use of CBCT scanners?
The scanner is useful for lots of different processes and treatments including planning and placing dental implants, diagnosing and detecting infections or even tumours, planning oral surgery, diagnosing temporomandibular joint disorders and endodontic, orthodontic and periodontal treatments.
The scan results show different parts of the jaws and joints and tissue within them so are particularly useful for trickier endodontic retreatments.
If you would like to know more about the benefits of the CBCT scanner or have a patient in mind that you would like to refer to us for any reason, call us and we will be more than happy to answer any questions.
