- Self Ligating Braces
Self-ligating braces are fixed braces that provide excellent results for a lot of different orthodontic issues.
They have been around for over 80 years and are less restrictive than most fitted braces as they do not have elastic bands and require fewer check-ups so can be more convenient for the patient. Whilst the wires are metal the brackets can be clear so blend in with the teeth and these brackets can be either passive or active.

How do these braces work?
A self-ligating brace moves the teeth gently with a minimal amount of wires and no friction. Each bracket has a ‘trap door’ design so the special orthodontic arch can slide along, allowing the teeth to move slowly into their new position.
What are the advantages of having a self-ligating brace?
The type of self-ligating brace we provide at the Oatlands Referral Centre is the Damon brace. This type of brace has a shorter treatment time with fewer reviews needed, has low profile brackets with smooth edges so does not irritate the sides of the mouth and is easier for the patient to clean it and their teeth.
How will my brace be fitted?
We conduct a full dental examination before deciding if this type of brace is suitable for the patient. If it is, we write up a treatment plan and pricing plan for the patient before individually measuring and fitting the brace.
If you have a patient who would benefit from self-ligating braces or any of our other orthodontic treatments, contact us today so we can start discussing their options.
